Generational Journeys
“After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the LORD or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.” (Judges 2:10 NLT)
Monarch butterflies fly over 3000 miles during their annual migration. However, it takes multiple generations to make this trek back and forth between Canada and Mexico. There are differences between each generation. Some only live a few weeks, while others live up to eight months. Some reproduce and die quickly, while others delay mating to conserve energy for the long migration.
The Israelites followed a similar pattern. The generation that left Egypt during the exodus is not the one who entered the Promised Land. Joshua and Caleb were the only ones who lived through the forty-year trek through the desert. The new generation who entered Canaan didn’t live like their ancestors. They obeyed God. They were reverent. They were faithful. After that generation died, their descendants who grew up around ungodly influences strayed into evil. They didn’t acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for them.
“This made the LORD burn with anger against Israel, so he handed them over to raiders who stole their possessions. He turned them over to their enemies all around, and they were no longer able to resist them.” (Judges 2:14 NLT)
Disobedience has consequences. When we rebel against God and chase after idols, we become alienated from our divine identity and purpose. The natural consequence of sin is exile into enemy territory where evil plunders our souls. Humanity seems to go through cycles of rebellion, repentance, and restoration. Sometimes it takes several generations for us to reach the destination of God’s purpose.
Covenantal fidelity honors God. We can learn from the mistakes of our ancestors. We don’t have to continue patterns of generational sin. Break the cycle. Repent. Be Faith Full.
Lord, I pray that every generation will honor You. Help us to break the cycle of generational sins. Teach us covenantal fidelity.

With God's help we can do our part, break the cycle, repent and be faith full!
