Healthspan
“This is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ.” (John 17:3 NLT)
A few decades ago, I started keeping a list of places I wanted to visit. Most of them are remote locations. As I get older and my health and energy are waning, I realize that my window to hike through these rugged terrains is shrinking.
Health is such a precious commodity. Even though human lifespans are increasing, our healthspans are not. What we choose to do with each day of health is up to us.
I have a friend who had a stroke when she was just a few years older than I am now. This stroke has severely limited her ability to speak, understand, read, and write. Her health struggles have influenced my choices. I could spend the rest of my life sightseeing, pleasure seeking, and indulging in hobbies. OR I could live for a higher purpose.
“O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.” (John 17:25-26 NLT)
Jesus revealed the Father’s love to us. As Christ followers, we are called to know God and make Him known. Every day is an opportunity to love God and serve Him. Whether in sickness or health, poverty or wealth, sorrow or joy, we can remain committed to reflect Christ’s character and reveal His love by our daily choices. This is the way to eternal, sustainable, purposeful, meaningful lives.
Lord Jesus, enable us to experience the Father’s love. Help us to know You in a deeper way and to reflect Your character. Grant us the discipline to avoid distractions. Teach us to live intentionally and purposefully. Guide us each day to serve and honor You.
