Mysterious Moths
“Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:14 NLT)
I didn’t know much about moths other than the dead ones I see around my porch light. They are dull brown and about the size of a coin. Then, someone gave me a card with a picture of a beautiful moth on it. I decided I wanted to learn more about these mysterious creatures. Moths are very similar to butterflies. They go through complete metamorphosis--from larva, to caterpillar, to weaving cocoons, and finally to developing wings. Moths are nocturnal. They pollinate flowers that open after dark. Some species of moths create silk to spin cocoons.
There is a common misconception that moths are drawn to flames. In reality, moths turn their backs to the light from the moon and stars in order to fly straight. Since natural light sources are far enough away, they never get close enough to harm themselves. However, in the presence of artificial light, they get disoriented. Their flight pattern is disrupted and they start spiraling around light bulbs until they fall or fly into them.
Like moths, we were created for God’s purposes. But Satan disguises himself as artificial lights. He distorts reality, disorients us with distractions, and deceives us into destruction. Spiritual discernment is key to resisting these temptations. We have to be able to distinguish between the light of Christ and the false flashiness that the world has to offer. Our natural instincts may trip us up. Thus, we have to rely on the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual discernment requires silence, attentiveness, study, prayer, and practice. We cannot tune into the Spirit unless we turn down the noise all around us.
Carve out quietness.
Learn to listen.
Study Scripture.
Pray for wisdom.
Obey God’s guidance.
Holy Spirit of Truth, grant us the discernment to stay away from evil. Teach us to always look to You for guidance as we navigate through this life. Even in the midst of darkness, remind us to sip on the nectar of the Word and pollinate the world with Your message.

Loved it.
Beautiful word picture application!
