“These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.” (1 Corinthians 10:11 NLT)
“What Not to Wear,” was a reality show that aired on TV in the early 2000’s. The hosts of the show advised people on their wardrobe choices, telling them to get rid of inappropriate styles of clothing. Individuals were given a makeover that transformed their appearance.
I wish there were an equivalent show about “What Not to Do.”
Fairy tales, myths, and legends in every culture have moral lessons. Characters who make bad choices are shown to have severe consequences. Their regression or destruction is held up as a cautionary tale on what not to do.
When I was young, I remember my parents pointing out people who had fallen from grace. Some were world leaders, business tycoons, celebrities, or sports stars. Some were just ordinary people in our community. Either way, the lesson was the same: “See how they had everything going for them? Then, they made certain bad choices and self-destructed. Don’t end up like them. Make good choices!” My parents could have been the hosts for a show titled: “Who Not to Become.”
“Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” (Romans 12:1 NLT)
The Bible teaches us what not to do. It is filled with cautionary stories about people who disobeyed God and destroyed themselves, their families, and their communities. It also gives us examples of virtuous individuals who followed God’s commands. These are the heroes we need to emulate. Let us lay aside any vices and inappropriate behavior, living in a way that is acceptable and pleasing to Jesus.
Lord, give us a character makeover. Take away our sinful habits. Help us to make good choices that honor You. Transform us from the inside out.
A quote I remember is, "It takes a lifetime to build a reputation & it can take one bad decision to ruin that reputation."
